Our Pastor

The Reverend Daryl Derek Porter is the Pastor of the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kennesaw, Georgia. Under his leadership, Mount Zion has become a pinnacle of community service and outreach in the Kennesaw community.

Pastor Porter firmly believes in feeding the hungry and clothing the naked and that everyone deserves a second chance. Reverend Porter is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. He attended the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education and later returned to Atlanta and attended the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) where he earned a Master of Divinity.

While attending the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) he was inducted into the Theta Phi International Honor Society for academic excellence in religious studies. Upon graduation from ITC he received the Bishop Frank C. and Martha C. Cummings Award from Turner Seminary for outstanding scholastic achievement. He received his Master of Divinity Degree with honors in 2004.

Before entering full time ministry, Pastor Porter worked for the penal system for 25 years and is now retired.

Daryl Porter is a fourth generation AME who was baptized at the early age of three months old in Atlanta, Georgia. He joined the Big Bethel AME family in 1991. While attending Big Bethel, Reverend Porter was a faithful servant working on several ministries such as; The Welcome Table Homeless Men Ministry, Samuel H. Giles Usher Board, Andrew Evangelistic Ministry, Trustee Board, Finance Board, and Van Ministry. Reverend Porter was an active teacher and mentor to the children of the Project Reach After-School Ministry. He accepted his call to the ministry on Easter Sunday, April of 2000.

On May 12, 2005, Rev. Porter was ordained an elder and received his first appointment to St. James AME Church in Cartersville, Georgia. Some of his accomplishments at St. James include: increasing worship services from  two Sunday services a month to four services a month, raising enough money to put a new roof on the main sanctuary and fellowship hall, and developing a unified fellowship with the Cassville United Methodist Church.

Pastor Porter is a proud husband, father, and grandfather. He and his wife, First Lady Diana, have one daughter, Zakeya, and 2 grandchildren.
